Alberta Carriers: What's In Your Driver Files?

Alberta Carriers: What's In Your Driver Files?

According to Section 41 of Commercial Vehicle Certificate and Insurance Regulation (AR314/2002), records must be kept for each driver qualified to operate a carrier's NSC commercial vehicle.

We have created two specific documents to help you with your driver files, to help ensure they meet the provincial regulatory requirements.

Down your copies now:

Aside from the obvious, meeting your regulatory requirement, the driver files serve multiple purposes to help carriers:

1) A consistent format for qualified drivers to maintain required safety and compliance documentation

2) Provides an opportunity for carriers to monitor their qualified drivers for safety performance, ensure their driver's license is still active, training, and more

3) Maintaining the required documentation will help you as the carrier during the time of an NSC audit or review

We have created specific guides to help prepare your Driver Files, which can be downloaded at any point!

Additional Details You Need to Know:

For an NSC Vehicle that operates solely within Alberta and the GVWR exceeds 11,793 KG then this is a Provincially registered Commercial Vehicle.

If the vehicle operates within and outside of Alberta and the GVWR exceeds 4,500 KG then this is a Federally registered Commercial Vehicle.

Driver Files must be retained at the carrier's principal place of business in Alberta for the year they were created, established, or received and the 4 calendar years immediately following.
