Small Wins - Large Success
A common question I hear from professionals in the transportation industry is “how do I get my team to buy into the company’s safety program?”
One approach, that in my experience works: celebrate the small wins.
What would define a small win?
Well, let’s look at this scenario:
A carrier is trying to improve its overall risk rating on its carrier profile. For the last few months, they have seen a continued increase in violations, convictions, and failed inspections.
A small win would be one month with no negative impacts on the carrier profile. No tickets, no failed inspections, etc.
Sure, the carrier will need an entire year of this type of performance to see a drastic change but how do you get there?
Try this:
At your next safety meeting (or plan to have a safety meeting) and celebrate an entire month of no negative impacts on the carrier profile. Make it a big deal that your team has accomplished a really significant goal that has a positive impact on the company.
Now, with that in mind - what other procedures can be celebrated for being done correctly? The signing of the bill of sale? Not idling trucks? No late deliveries?
These, in the big picture, have a significant impact on the company, and to gain momentum, I encourage carriers to implement the small win celebration practice now to see the big wins later.
