Colder Temperatures - What To Inspect?

As you are aware, colder temperatures can create a different set of challenges on mechanical parts than under warmer and more desirable conditions. The thing about power units, such as trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, or whatever mechanical unit you are operating, or hauling such as commercial trailers - regardless of the temperatures outside, we expect them to operate as they were made to do.

In order for these to operate as they were manufactured to do so, they need to be well maintained. I highly encourage a thorough inspection prior to the temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit). The reason for this, is you want to ensure there are no minor leaks or cracks in your system when temperatures are still desirable. Once you reach colder temperatures, parts can crack or break much faster.

I highly encourage a qualified mechanic to inspect your equipment prior to the winter conditions. I always recommend Glover Truck International in southern Alberta for all mechanical inspection and repairs. When operating elsewhere, I highly encourage working with any International dealership as they have certified heavy-duty mechanics working in their shops that can assist with your equipment. In addition to the service, each dealership offers fantastic customer service and I am proud to support International.

Items that I encourage be inspected, align with Provincial and National requirements. Some of these requirements are communicated within the regulations, while others are communicated in standards. The Canadian Council of Motor Transportation Administrators (CCMTA) communicates in the National Safety Code Standard 11 - Maintenance and Periodic Inspection Standards, items on commercial vehicles that need to be inspected and maintained.

In Alberta, for example, the Traffic Safety Act communicates through the regulations, specific items that are required to be inspected and maintained, and to what level.
